The first impression is the last(ing) impression

First impressions are often said to be lasting. The thought of that can be intimidating and scary.  First impressions can have a significant impact on how prospective clients perceive you or how you will perceive them.

I experienced this uncertainty when I had to start my new business’ Facebook page. Are my followers going to love or hate my content? What is the outcome going to be? The significant words of Harvey Mackay “ You never get a second chance to make a good first impression” was the driving force behind me trusting my gut and doing the work.

In this blog post, we’ll explore six tips for making a good first impression.

1.  Dress appropriately

Dressing appropriately shows that you have put effort into your appearance and care about the impression you make on others. It also shows that you respect the business and what it stands for.

Note:  Be true to your own personal style but always be respectful towards the people you want to impress.  You can always dress up an item of clothing or down by adding or removing clothing accessories.

2. Make eye contact.

I know this can be difficult for some people.  Making eye contact during a conversation can show that you are engaged and interested in what the other person is saying and that you have self-confidence.

Tip:  Practice it on your friends or family members.  It will soon come to you naturally.

3. Smile

I love this one!!  A genuine smile can make you appear more approachable and friendly.  Smile with your eyes also.  A fake smile can be seen miles away.

Remember that everyone smiles in the same language… Give it a try!

4.  Pay attention to your body language

Try and keep your arms at your sides or at least open and lean towards the other person while they are talking.  It shows that you are open and receptive.  If your arms are folded it may feel like you are shutting the other person off.  The only time folded arms are “allowed” is when it is cold, and you want to warm yourself by folding your arms.

5.  Ask good questions

The easiest way to start any conversation is to get people to share who they really are.  People like to talk about themselves. Ask interesting questions and really listen to what the other person really is saying.  Everyone wants to be heard and acknowledged.  If you can master asking good and relevant questions the race is 90% won.

6. Be yourself/Be real

While it is extremely important to make a good first impression it is equally important to be authentic and true to yourself.  Coming across as somebody else comes across as insincere and not to mention how taxing it will be on yourself to do role-play every day.  People are drawn to people that are “real” and are themselves and will open up a lot easier when they know you are yourself.

In conclusion, first impressions can have a significant impact on how we are perceived by others.  It is said that it takes 4-7 seconds for a person to make a first impression.  So, I urge you to put some effort into making a good first impression.  You will never have the opportunity again.

You’ve got this!
